Some Stuff I Am Pretty Much Loving

It's been a really long time since I typed anything of real relevance on this blog. I've had the ideas stored up but literally zero+ time to get them out. And it's a shame. Because it's not like I'm tootin' my own horn or whatever, but some of those ideas are really quite rad.

So, to recap: I have a surplus of awesome ideas brewing, right? And now, it's Thursday at 12:32 AM and I actually have some time to get the ideas out! But in comes the other problem... I'm really just too damn tired! So let's make a compromise. I'm just going to do a brief list of things that have been rattling around in my brain lately. Some things I like (Law & Order: SVU). Some things I love (Brunch at Clinton St. Baking Co). And, a lot of things that are over 140 characters and can't fit on Twitter.

Thing #1!

Toro Y Moi is a 23 year old guy from Columbia, South Carolina who is actually named Chaz Bundick. He makes a lot of cool lo-fi music with a slight soul-ish/traditional pop underlying feeling. Listening to Toro Y Moi doesn't make me feel like a jerk on Bedford at all, not even in the slightest.

Thing #2!

Cropped Tops. Even though I haven't done a sit-up in about 3 months (shhh! don't tell!), I really like these whimsical little numbers. They make me feel all Clarissa Explains It All on one hand, and on the other hand, the new set of high-fashion crop tops make me feel like somewhat of an adult. Plus, you can wear them everywhere, even work if you play your high-waisted jeans and under-garments right!

Normally, my feet are too small and the heel to high for me to feel comfortable in shoes such as these, but this pair is lightweight, angled properly, and an all-around dream to wear with a cute pair of socks or tights. Plus, they only cost this much.

Punk in Africa is what looks to be a very promising documentary in the works by Meerkat Media, exploring the evolution of the punk music scene in South Africa. For the past three decades while punk flourished in democratic Western countries like England and the US, it existed as a largely underground anti-fascist movement in a country ruled by a fascist, apartheid regime. This discourse is explored in the backdrop of Punk in Africa's chronicling of the rise of South Africa's original pioneering punk band National Wake.

The below is a teaser from the film, which is still in production in Johannesburg. Hopefully we don't have to wait too long for the release date... really excited to see this in some format.

The older I get, the more understanding I am of Madonna. Musically, she's legendary, but not necessarily my cup of chai. What I care about more than her music is the very tangible femininity she is associated with. As we move more towards gender equality (didn't say were there yet-- just moving more towards it!), I really like that she has created a sense of being a woman, without tying it to ideals that are necessarily feminine in nature.

Things like.
Strength.

Independence.
Confrontation.
Transformation.
Longevity.

These things. They are all ideals that have traditionally belonged to the masculine sector of our society, but I'm really inspired by the way that she reclaims these qualities and infuses them with a unique sense of womanhood. I forgot until just now that I ran into it again how inspired I am by this video. MJ was making a statement about his sexuality and confronting rumors with this song. The visual choice to keep it sepia-toned, and based around a simple black-and-white color scheme (including the actors-- Michael, at this point was "white", while Naomi Campbell's skin tone is a rich darkness) allowed Michael's performance and the camera work to do the mind-bending work. The video does an inspiring job of conveying the idea that surface-level simple "black and white" ideas such as gender, sexuality, or race are often more complicated and fluid than expected.

Plus, the song is inexplicably enjoyable.

I Wanna Rock!

So, yeah, recently I had the chance to catch up with New York based band The Jett Blackk Heart Attack, and they are KIND of really interesting! The band, which has collectively played together in some form or another for over 20 years, is a throwback to the roots of metal and rock and roll. Although I am not the biggest hard rocker, I appreciate all forms of music and have a super huge respect for 1970s metal, because a lot of 90s grunge rock took great influence from earlier metal. Plus, the guys in The Jett Blackk Heart Attack rock some wickedly awesome old school style creepers, so I automatically had a soft spot in my heart for them!

Recently, they have had a string of gigs all over New York state and are working on a record, tentatively titled Needle To the Groove. So, it was as good of a time as any to learn a bit more about their sound and what they have in store for the future...

TLF: The Jett Blackk Heart Attack is a combination of "roots of metal" and... what else? Describe the sounds that influence you as a group, as well as each of you personally. Do you feel like the combination of your personal and group influences meshes well, or are some of you guys working with influences that an audience would never expect?

JBHA: For us, the "roots of metal" lie within the hard rock of the late 60's and early 70's. Bands like Deep purple, Black Sabbath, and Led Zeppelin really shaped everything that came after them. We are influenced by many of the bands of that era- aside from the aforementioned holy trinity of hard rock, we're also influenced heavily by bands like AC/DC, MC5, Blue Cheer, The Sonics, ZZ Top, and Jimi Hendrix. But there are some influences that our audience wouldn't expect- modern influences like the Swedish band- Dungen, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains, Death From above 1979, and Velvet Revolver. It's all about true hard rock when it comes to what we do in The Jett Blackk Heart Attack. All of us in the band are lovers of all types of music. But what we are doing in this band, is really striving for pure hard rock, in a classic sense.

TLF: You all have been playing together for almost 20 years, correct? How did you meet and form, and what were the trials and tribulations along the way (there has to have been at least one you can share with us!)?

JBHA: To clarify, on and off for 20 years. We had a few bands together. First we were called "False pride", that was from 89-90. We thought we were so cool... ha ha man were we wrong! But, a few years later we started a hardcore band called "Tension*" with my brother Mike on vocals. That went from 92-2000. Many trials, many tribulations, many great stories and many great memories. Growing up back then in the Long Island Hardcore scene, we were an untouchable family. Every weekend there was a show with close to 1000 kids, and everyone knew everyone. It wasn't just a trend, it was a lifestyle..and many friendships were bonded, that's actually when we first met Dave Case. He was playing bass in a band called "Cleanser" and that's also where a lot of the bigger bands like Taking back Sunday, Glassjaw,Brand new and Head automatica all came from.We all hung out together and played shows together. No barricades, no bouncers, no egos, just family and friends .The bands and the fans were all on one level. After Tension* had broken up in 2000, we all went on to do other things. In 2007 we had a reunion show as Tension* and decided to keep playing together, but take the music in a different direction That's when we recruited Dave Case, who was exactly what we needed to complete the Jett Blackk sound.

TLF:Live performance is a big part of any band-- describe a The JBHA performance in three words! Who are some of your performance idols, and what do you hope fans walk away with after each show?

JBHA: The JBHA performance in 3 words: exhilarating, nostalgic, memorable. Lets face it, these days if you are not at least exhilarating to watch then why am I paying good money and wasting my time to go "see" your band? They call it a show, put one on please! Nostalgic, because our show musically lends itself to an era that gave birth to a lot of music that is still being listened to and appreciated today by fans both young and old. Although it may be your first time seeing us, it still seems familiar; comfortable almost. And third, memorable because every time we look out into the crowd, we see everyone singing along to every song. That speaks for itself.
As far as having performance idols... some of the slinkier types of performers, like Scott Weiland, Layne Staley and the late great jim morrison. Man, that guy didn't have to do shit and it was genius!! And of course those front men had world class performers onstage with them with which to interact, so we make sure to have good physical alchemy while performing. It is very important to look like you love each other and are happy to be sharing the stage, which is very easy for us 'cause we do, and we are.

TLF: There are a lot of "roots of metal" bands out there, but what do you think sets The JBHA apart from the rest of the modern musical landscape? What makes you unique, in addition to your sound?

JBHA: Because of our age (early 30's) All of us in the Jett Blackk Heart Attack grew up on the metal of the 80's (Metallica, Judas Priest, Slayer, Exodus, Voivod, Megadeth, Nuclear Assault etc) our first bands early in our careers were modeled after those bands in one way or another. As we've grown up we also were well aware and respectful of the bands that are considered "Roots of Rock and Roll". I think the best hard rock bands and artists in rock history are based off of blues and legends such as Led Zeppelin, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, AC/DC, Deep Purple, ZZ Top etc. Most people will argue the sweet years of rock were from 1968-1978. Rock bands had so many different ways of musically expressing themselves without any real boundaries or expectations back then. They just went out and kicked ass. That's what makes us unique. It's our ability to connect all age groups. We love young kids skateboarding to connect with us all the way up to adults that lived the good old days of rock back in the day. It's really trying to combine the "classic" with the "modern" eras.

TLF: Lastly-- tell us what's up with you guys in the future! Any shows, CDs, EPs, or events we should know about?

JBHA: Basically The JBHA is a band that will always be doin' our thing.and as much as any band would like to "get signed"..we refuse to just sit around and wait to make things happen. Especially in a time where bands should only be counting on themselves to make the moves they need to make to succeed. We are very lucky to have a lot of talented friends in our corner helping us out. As of right now we are in the process of recording our first full length record titled "NEEDLE TO THE GROOVE" with producer Joe Cincotta of Fullforce studios.
We also just finished our video for the single "Hell or high water" with director Christian Winters. We just finished our website www.thejbha.com.We also have The Jett Blackk Heart Attack iphone app that can be purchased in the itunes app store. We are like rock n roll sharks,we gotta keep eatin and we gotta keep movin!! There's a lot goin on with us at the moment and we wouldn't have it any other way.Its how we roll. we love what we do and we stand poised to take on the world..because the future is JETT BLACKK!!!!

Obviously, the most epic show of all time is The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. Wills, Hills, Ash and Carls made us laugh about EVERYTHING! And I seriously mean everything. Like... Drugs. Guns. Bullies. Blackmail. Strippers. Baby Mommas. Tyra Banks attempting to act. All of those things are super funny, right?

Tabatha over at MOB recently ranted about American Appy ads and the whole ongoing controversy surrounding the proliferation of nearly nude ladies in compromising positions awaiting some type of "good times" in what horny men can only imagine to be the near future.

Yes, the ads are ultimately sexist. Yes, Dov Charney is one step away from perv of the year (the dude has leered at more multi-culti co-eds than any 40+ year old man should ever be allowed to leer at). Yes, a hairy, creepy Dov Charney is a pretty decent explanation of why I can't date a Jewish guy (much to my mother's chagrin). And yes, everyone who buys more than just Ts and leggings (and the occasional pair of socks) at AA is kind of a really big douchebag.

But, yes, as creepy as Dov's ads are, they do promote a healthier body image than the Dior ads in the subway that have been airbrushed to death. I can't stand the fact that it's still sex that sells... but at least it's sex whose owner's got a fatty, like most girls (including me, holla!)! I hate that an upskirt contributes to really silly-high sales... but at least it's an upskirt that doesn't belong to someone with blonde hair and blue eyes.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, American Apparel ads are creepy. But I'm mostly alright with that...

Images of the sportswear company's collaboration with Reebok were just leaked today on HighSnobette, and what do you know-- the sneak has lovingly been coined the "Ladies First" model!! A black high top featuring bright yellow laces, a tightly perforated leather upper, and subtle row of spiky studs, the Ladies First is exactly what we would have expected from Hellz' foray into footwear! Always paying the upmost attention to detail, Hellz Bellz included understated design choices such as a fold-down polka dotted upper and cushiony insoles reading "I'm Ten Steps Ahead of You!". Finished off with the signature Hellz nail polish bottle logo, the slogan is mean to inspire the ladies to always be FIRST in the game!

I cannot wait for these to drop! They're exactly what makes me so swoon-y about Hellz in the first place. I really adore these Raf Simmons x Dr. Martens collabo joints, and I want them. Like REALLY bad! They remind me of the copper-painted man I used to watch for hours when I was a kid in San Francisco's Union Square. He used to stand there, completely still, painted in copper from head to toe. I don't know exactly why he did it. That was just his thing. And I was completely fascinated by it.

So while I was writing the below post about my over-excessive dieting and exercise phase in life, I was totally watching an episode of Top Chef Las Vegas. And HOLY HELL did Padma's claws come out. We all know she is so gorgeous that it's almost blinding, but her sort of misplaced bitchiness and underhanded comments came out of nowhere, and they were kind of hot! Her "well that's not gonna happen because we're sending someone home TODAY", in response to a chef's claim that they wouldn't want to see anyone go home, was as bad ass as she's going to get. I genuinely appreciated her effort!

Plus, she wears a leopard print skirt and Loubies like it's no one's business, all while eating one amazing dish after the next. She's good, really good!

About That Thing Called "Exercise"

So, it has officially been 6 months since I last worked out. Somewhere in those 6 months I THINK I took a pilates class or two. But pretty much my only steady work outs have been the walks to the train. And the walks back. Sometimes I'll walk to the grocery store, which is 5 blocks away. I try to convince myself that I walk a lot more than I do, but now that I'm actually writing it out, I realize that I don't walk that much at all.

Working out really sucks for me. Some girls like it though! Those girls are the ones that say stuff like "oh it totally de-stresses me"! Or the ones that perpetrate the myth that "working out during my period TOTALLY relieves my cramps". As far as I'm concerned, these girls are big skinny liars! Working out actually stresses me out more, mostly because I have never gotten over the fact that I always feel like I'm dying during those first 10 minutes. And when it comes to my period, working out just makes me feel really sweaty. With cramps. Summary--in the fantasy land of Gee, working out is not a good look. I know that attitude is really unhealthy and gross and all that stuff, so I try to blame my inactiveness on other stuff, like this: "I can't join a gym because I have no money!" That might be true, possibly. But yeah, it really is mostly because I'm super lazy.

I used to work out though. In fact, I used to work out 6 days a week, twice a day. I did this when I was in college, for months at a time. I did it mostly because I felt really bad about myself. I was one of those girls that truly believed that being anything over a size 4 was fat. I don't know why I thought that, but I did. As a kid, I was always a little chubby. Never dangerously, but always a little pudgy. Then I went to college in New York. For someone with already established body issues, it was a pretty shitty city to go to college in. Everyone around me was really really skinny, mostly because they did a lot of coke. Logically, I knew that. I also knew that at 5'2" and 130 lbs, I had boobs, hips, thighs, and a butt that would never really go away. That was only logically, though. On the whole I am not logical. So I acted accordingly and worked out excessively and ate 800 calories a day until, in just 2.5 months, I was down to 102 lbs. But I still wasn't skinny. I still had said boobs, hips, thighs, and butt, albeit smaller versions. I didn't look like the wafer thin cokeheads, or runway bitches. Even after busting my ass, destroying my social life, and becoming obsessed with the rowing machine. Then, I think it somehow just clicked. And I got off the elliptical and had a cookie, and lived to tell the tale.

I'm still 5'2", and I wear a size 6 (sometimes 8) now. I weigh 117 lbs, and have great boobs and a nice, not so small butt. And I like it. I eat a lot of green stuff, but I also eat cookies. I eat when I'm hungry, and stop eating when I'm full. I know I need to get exercise in there, but I hope that when I finally do, I'll be doing it because I want to be healthier, and not because cookies are scaring me.

Ok blog nation. In case all 7 of you dear readers haven't noticed, if there's one thing I love to gush on and on about (besides Hellz Bellz), it's nostalgia. I'm stuck in the past and cannot get enough of 90s jams, parachute pants, Lisa Frank and scrunchies. I think I'm cursed with lamenting for all eternity about how awesome life was before it hit 2002.

That's why it pains me deep in my little heart to report this really sad news. The pinnacle of education-based TV has been cancelled. READING RAINBOW is officially off the air! Two dozen Emmys and several Eric Caryle books later, the Levar Burton hosted show is being booted off the air because no financeers have stepped forward with the several hundred thousand dollars needed to renew the show's broadcast rights. That, and the fact that hope of educational programming is now pinned on a slutted up explorer with a backpack.

I know that all I have in my bank account is like, $12 and this is a recession and what not, but WHAT THE DUCES?! No one, literally NO ONE, could come up with like a hundred grand to save the butterfly in the sky?

Sadfaces abound :( I'm pouring out a little liquor for my dead homie-- RIP Reading Rainbow.

This is one gnarly video lookbook certainly worthy of J Scott's greatness! I am really feeling the idea of the models jumping in and out of each different frame-- literally, cartoon drawn frames. Moments of it remind me of the cartoons of my youth, a la some Looney Tunes "Be vewwy quiet, we're hunting fow wabbits" stuff, while other moments are completely cutting edge and futuristic. All of this within 30 seconds. Brilliant, as usual.

Words That People Use. And I Hate.

With the advent of blogs, proper diction has basically become a fond memory of a yesteryear that includes POGS and Rolling Stone issues that were actually relevant. Descriptive words are no longer in demand. I mean, who gives a fuck about words like "retrospect" or "stunning" when you have replacements as suitable as "LOLZOMGEEZIES" or "ROFLFMLDUDEZ". Srsly!

Keeping all of this in mind, I've composed a list of internet-popular words that everyone seems to *heart* using, and a compilation of all the various reasons why I hate said words.

UBER

Every time I use this word, I feel like a 5 ft tall version of Arnold Schwarzenegger squeezing on some political reporter's poor unsuspecting buttocks. Squeezing tightly. Basically, it makes my stomach churn major cookies.

CLUSTERFUCK

I can just picture the Keds-wearing morons who came up with this cunning combo. They got way too high and sat around with a loaf of brie that would have tasted so much better if they had warmed it just 42 seconds longer. One of the brie-inhaling morons somehow managed to use the word "cluster". Someone else said "fuck". And then, a dim light bulb went off. They all looked at each other, then texted their friends. And thus, "clusterfuck" was born.

FAIL

Ok. I get it. You don't like something. But do we really need to waste solid capital letters on you whining about how "EPICally" you hate something? How over-dramatic can you be?

I think I've mentioned it a couple of times on the good ol' blog here, but when I'm not writing about irrelevant things to distract you from your workday, I'm myself am working! And my 9 to 5 job is in the business of making movies.

I used to like my job. I used to like it a lot. But, like any job it gets boring if you don't have a real zest for it. So, I began to hate it. Hate it a lot. I think what put the nail in the coffin was Scary Movie 5. Srsly movie making business? Do I really want to work in an industry that thinks we need a Scary Movie 5? So, I started writing online. Partly because I love writing, but mostly because online is the only place that would accept my writing. So far, writing has been going pretty good. And in this future, there is no Scary Movie 5 looming in the distance. I still work in movie making, but the more I explore online, I realize that I want to make movies for the online set, about the designers and the products and the bands that move my world.

Here's an interview with a guy that's totally inspiring me to achieve the above mentioned. Levi Maestro has been producing his own online show Maestro Knows for 2 seasons now, and it's kind of a big deal. A really big deal. Because he basically films his life, his skating, even his eating. And he edits it himself and makes it look REALLY good. I guess the best way to put is that watching his show makes want to make my own show, and makes me miss In N Out Burgers really badly.

You Can Tell What Movie I Saw This Weekend...

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a fine actor. I've been impressed by the guy since Brick, mostly because as an actor, he tells real stories in a very real way. Yet there is always something in his performance that alludes to the unreal, as in holy-shit-this-guy-is-so-good-it's-unreal. He understands when to go big, and when to make something so small that as an audience, we can see a lifetime unfold in one small gesture.

Plus, he's also very easy on the eyes. Swoon.

With hair as gold as Van Halen's best-selling albums, and a skirt as short as her attention span, the princess ruled the male student body with a steady stream of "accidental" upskirts and her own unique brand of dim-witted charm. Who was the girl who had it all you ask?

With fashion trends taking a turn towards the 90's grunge metal worst (or best, depending on how nostalgic you're feeling), it was only fitting that we pay tribute to the Married with Children hottie who inspired the wardrobe behind many a Cobra Snake snaps. Kelly, the ultimate trailer trash babe, had a style her own consisting mostly of multiple pairs of ripped jeans in various degrees of acid wash, topped with belly baring bustiers or cropped bra tops. Her obsession with all things tight was apparent with each bright spandex bandage dress she donned, accenting the minis with biker-style chain belts. Short was another obsession not far behind--her dark floral print babydoll dresses were as teeny tiny as could be and were often complimented with a pair of Doc-style boots. But heels were really more of Kelly's forte and she was comfortable rocking the highest of black pumps. Leather and velvet were her main squeezes, and if she wore flannel, you better believe it was knotted to showcase her midriff in all its glory! Bold silver cross and star pendants were all a part of the rocker-chic accessories package, as were the western-inspired studded bracelets. Top it all off with dark lips, darker eyes, and the baddest (but in a good way) roots I've ever seen, and you have one 90s bombshell who we refuse to close the book on!

Violette: "Fangs of New York" Video Lookbook

A couple of weeks ago on my other home on the interwebs, M.I.S.S, I penned a gushing little ditty about director and designer Vashtie Kola, touching briefly on her uber successful fashion line, Violette. Cut to early August and Va$htie is back at it, dropping the video lookbook for the line's Summer 09 collection (I guess better late than never right?). Cunningly dubbed Fangs of New York, the collection of T's and tanks is chock full of simple designs emblazoned with the brand's signature "V"'s. Horizontally, vertically and chopped and screwed, Violette's revolutionized the logo T, taking it from bland to bold. Released in 1985, it skyrocketed the band to American fame and resulted in the recording of their wildly successful record Once Upon a Time, even though it was a sell-out piece of commercial fluff.

Try a Little Tenderness: RIP John Hughes

Director and writer John Hughes, who basically defined the way anyone under 30 thinks about the teenage experience in America, died today at the age of 59.

I wrote one of my favorite thesis papers from my college years on the director and his unique portrayal of adolescent women in film. His strength at creating characters that became the prototype for modern teen life will not be forgotten, and I salute him with one of my favorite scenes from Pretty in Pink. Enjoy and RIP John Hughes.

Gaia Tries Taming Nature

Baltimore bred street artist Gaia just released a superb short video piece, Taming Nature, chronicling a day in the life of an unforgettable public defacer.

With most of his pieces based on simple head forms in large irregular shapes, Gaia's linocut works have already appeared in galleries such as Ad Hoc, and on the streets of BK, Chicgao, and Wham City. Gaia is part of the burgeoning new class of street artists who, unlike their predecessors, aren't above "selling out" by having their work displayed in galleries. Although street art is in large part a fundamental reclaiming of the public space, newcomers like Gaia are also viewing their street masterpieces as valuable self-promotional tools. While in the past graffiti artists preferred pseudonyms and tags, the evolved class, including Gaia, prefer to emblazon their names in full detail on their work so that gallery owners can take notice. Regardless of whether or not Gaia and others like him are selling out, the work speaks for itself-- good stuff! Check out more on his flickr stream.

Holy Rockers NYC, Batman! The streetwear clothing label notorious for their beyond bright colors and thoughtful prints has just released images from their upcoming collaboration line with God's Prey. Bearing the name Infinity's End, the voluminous designs are unisex in nature and feature prints of a slightly more sophisticated nature. Although the colors are still every bit as vivid as Rockers' palate, the cuts and materials used are decidely more conceptual and mature. Designs like roomy harem pants, smart batwing dresses, loose printed tanks and a hooded jacket I am lusting hardcore for are all a step up, design wise, than the company's typical Ts. Look for the line to release in the Spring of 2010, and view the rest of the line below.
