Who Gives a Damn About Yeezy?!

It was all about Asher Roth and his lady at the VMAs last night! How brilliant is this duo?! To quote the Golden Arches, "I'm Lovin' It!".

My Hunny

Here's my original girl crush, the cute-as-apple-pie (after you've smoked a bowl or two) Zoe Kravitz, at the I Heart Charlotte Ronson party.

What's not to love?! Down to earth and stylish... this is an ensemble any girl would wear.

Still loving her!

He Knows

I think I've mentioned it a couple of times on the good ol' blog here, but when I'm not writing about irrelevant things to distract you from your workday, I'm myself am working! And my 9 to 5 job is in the business of making movies.

I used to like my job. I used to like it a lot. But, like any job it gets boring if you don't have a real zest for it. So, I began to hate it. Hate it a lot. I think what put the nail in the coffin was Scary Movie 5. Srsly movie making business? Do I really want to work in an industry that thinks we need a Scary Movie 5? So, I started writing online. Partly because I love writing, but mostly because online is the only place that would accept my writing. So far, writing has been going pretty good. And in this future, there is no Scary Movie 5 looming in the distance. I still work in movie making, but the more I explore online, I realize that I want to make movies for the online set, about the designers and the products and the bands that move my world.

Here's an interview with a guy that's totally inspiring me to achieve the above mentioned. Levi Maestro has been producing his own online show Maestro Knows for 2 seasons now, and it's kind of a big deal. A really big deal. Because he basically films his life, his skating, even his eating. And he edits it himself and makes it look REALLY good. I guess the best way to put is that watching his show makes want to make my own show, and makes me miss In N Out Burgers really badly.

Watch StreetLevel's interview with Maestro below. He knows!

You Can Tell What Movie I Saw This Weekend...

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a fine actor. I've been impressed by the guy since Brick, mostly because as an actor, he tells real stories in a very real way. Yet there is always something in his performance that alludes to the unreal, as in holy-shit-this-guy-is-so-good-it's-unreal. He understands when to go big, and when to make something so small that as an audience, we can see a lifetime unfold in one small gesture.

Plus, he's also very easy on the eyes. Swoon.

I loved his new flick, 500 Days of Summer. Go check it out!

Dueling Divas-- Current and Throwbacks

R&B divas Rihanna and Ciara kept themselves busy over the past week, with both unveiling new looks up top. Designed to play up their increasingly "edgy" personas, Ciara cropped her long and faithful weave into a punky pixie cut, complete with a face-framing bang much like the one Rihanna was sporting in the early stages of her short do. Meanwhile, Little Miss Princess took her short cut up a notch, shaving both sides off to create a rooster-inspired mohawk of sorts. Celeb bloggers have been pitting the two singers against each other for the past few months now, claiming that Ciara's attempts to upgrade to fashionista status is a calculated move to bite Rihanna's title as fashion tastemaker in the R&B game. Industry insiders have accused Ciara of "stealing" Rhi Rhi's stylists, hair gurus, and make up wizards, as well as her producers, beatmakers, and video directors. Oh, the dramaz!

Of course, the face-off between Rihanna and Ciara is nothing new. R&B Divas have been dueling since the dawn of Mowtown, it's just the nature of the beast. It was a feud that split up the Supremes, an epic cat fight that ripped apart the Mariah and Whitney's friendship, and time still hasn't told us who's won in the throwdown between Aretha and Tina! These commonly cited feuds are all fine and dandy, but there is one tumultuous battle that often goes overlooked in the annals of diva history, one that still continues (to some extent) to this day...

Brandy VS. Monica

In this throwdown, Brandy would appear to be the obvious winner. After all, the songstress enjoyed a few platinum records, the starring role on the long-running Moesha, and the hairstyle that launched a thousand micro-braids. Brandy was the wholesome diva, the kind that sang about innocent crushes, sittin' up in her room, and desperately wanting to be down. Brandy's toothy smile and droopy hats were so cute, that you couldn't help but want to pinch her cheeks and utter an "awww, look at the kid trying to be grown!" every time she crooned about loving someone so much that it made her cry. Flash forward to a disastrous car accident later (Brandy was charged with manslaughter, but settled out of court) though , getting bounced by her record label, and a weave so horrendous we're still suffering whiplash... it seems that Brandy's lost her footing in this uphill battle!

Monica is the underdog in this battle, but like any good underdog, she eventually clawed her way to the top. The diva in this corner currently has a top 20 R&B single on the charts, a duet with Keisha Cole, and a BET series set to premiere later this year. The road wasn't always so easy for her though. Unlike Brandy, she never had the "wholesome girl" thing going for her. Monica was more of a hard edge, the girl from the hood that would take a hammer to your Honda if you crossed her! Romancing a jailed rapper, singing about getting her man out of the streets, and being forced to cover up her tatts all made Monica the wild child, at least in comparison to Brandy's PG persona. Although she never hit the big time like Brandy, jams like Angel of Mine (don't even try denying that you bumped it in the 8th grade, you know it was the song of the year!) solidified her steady climb to the top.

Who is the victor? Rhi Rhi or Ci Ci? Brandy or Monica? Whoever ends up taking the prize home, we are pretty sure that there will never be a shortage of divas ready to yank the weaves off each other! Enjoy Brandy and Monica taking it to the streets with their "Bitch, please" duet, The Boy is Mine!

Cassie's Edgy Now, Ya Heard?

Two celeb tattoos in one week, it must be something in the water...

Check out little Miss Edgy, Cassie, flaunting her new hair and a small tattoo above her left ear last night at the NYC Museum of Natural History's 40th Anniversary Celebration of the Lunar Landing hosted by Louis Vuitton.

Can't make out what it says, but I'm not mad at it! Definitely cute! Can't say the same for that hair though...

Made Me Fall 09

I'm a bit late on this so I'm sure you've seen it plastered all over the net already, but my fanatic adoration of Made Me can't go ignored!

The successful clothing line Made Me, conceptualized and designed by the fabulous Erin Magee, has just released a preview their upcoming Fall/Winter collection. Entitled "Mes Amies" (which means "my friends" in French), the lookbook is a black-and-white affair featuring the faces of some of Erin's favorite industry movers and shakers. Made Me supporters such as songtresses Nina Sky, stylist/DJ Radio Rose Garcia, and A-Morir designer Kerin Rose all make cameos in the shots, as well as several others. Magee says:

“Each personality has helped in some way or another with building the MadeMe brand. I told everyone, ‘Come as you are,’ since we all happen to be really stylish and cute! The shoot was easy and I knew the personalities would reflect well on camera. I am really proud of everyone!”

The upcoming line further explores Made Me's tough-girl aesthetic, featuring studded denim cut-off and faux furry vests, plaid tops, and a floral-print version of the brand's coveted leather jackets. Stay tuned to stockists such as Karmaloop to cop the collection, and as always you can pre-order your favorite pieces at Made Me's webshop.

The Spider and the Pitbull

Peep the Pitbull in a Skirt getting tatted up last week by super producer Swizz Beats. Although there's nothing canine about this ink, it is nice to be able to post a new celeb tattoo because it's been a while! Closeup below... do you guys think Eve's spider is a good look, or lacking?

Sometimes You Just Gotta Expose the Star-Studded Titties!

Guess whose star-covered ta-ta made a special appearance at a Vegas nightclub this past weekend? None other than our girl Princess Rhi Rhi! The songstress was seen socializing with the ROC crew donning a black blazer and a wonderfully shiny metal pasty in the shape of a star.

I personally think that if you're going to flash some tit, this would be one of the more classier ways to do so, but what do you think? Has the star gone too far with her itty bitty titties?

What about my rhyming-- we all know that shit has gone way too far!

Tragic Surprise

Luxury sunglasses brand Mosley Tribes recruited celebrated photographer Jory Cody and up-and-coming LA actor Alex Beh to produce a couple of beautiful shots for a special lookbook. The shoot showcases the brand's Lyndel and Raynes designs, which are influenced by the classic designs of the 1950s aviators and the 1980s wayfarer. The clothing for the shoot was provided by politically influenced brand Apolis Activism, which has become considerably popular since its 2004 debut.

Besides top notch garments, accessories, and a hunky model, the photographs are strikingly reminiscent of an old-school type of glamour and a subtle, doomed machismo, representing the type of man who rides willingly into the danger facing him as if it were a heightened type of excitement. Icons such as the smoldering stars James Dean or Marlon Brando, come to mind when I see these photos. There is a sense of fated beauty to these images, mostly due to the softness of the natural lighting contrasting with Beh's knowing expression in each of the pics. These photos give me goosebumps, as if Beh knows that when he turns around to walk down that highway, or drive away in that car, an eerie future will befall him. These photos capture the idea that the overwhelming beauty in this world is constantly contrasting with doomed fates and sad endings. Isn't that what makes tragedy so real though?

I really like Jory Cody's photography, after checking out his portfolio. He has a unique ability to capture multiple dimensions of his subjects in just one shot. Make sure you check out his portfolio online at his website.

Farrah Fawcett Passes

Fair, feathered hair beauty Farrah Fawcett passed away today at the age of 62 after losing her battle with cancer. She will be remembered for her smile, beauty, charm, and ability to light up the small screen.

Her last words were simply, bravely, "I'm Happy. I'm Ready."

Our thoughts are with her family.

Red Bottoms

Get our girl Rhi Rhi in the red-bottoms earlier this week in LA while chillin' with Pharell. Not mad at the Mickey Mouse tank either, she's gettin it in!

M.C. Ya'll

There was a brief moment in time when the batcase known as Mariah Carey was actually cool. A sliver of a moment when she was hip, refined, and sexy. That sliver, know as the Butterfly album phase, was all about Mariah reclaiming her independence and breaking out of the pop bubble. She was freeing herself from the shackles that bound her, namely Tommy Matolla, and embracing a doper, iller, fresher alter ego (and this was before alter-egos were Sasha Fierce popular)-- M.C.

M.C. wasn't afraid to show her body, express her sexuality, and experiment with a broader set of reference points on camera. Her look for this album, both in promotional photos and videos, was influenced by a retro pin-up girl aesthetic. From the sailor costumes in the Honey video, to the simple black slinky number in My All , its clear that our girl was trying to glam herself up to become a retro diva, an image which fit a lot better with the overall sultry range she vocally explored on the Butterfly album.

The tour de force of the album, visually and sonically by far, was the Mobb Deep sampled "The Rooftop". M.C. is definitely crushin' in this one without a doubt. The art direction is beyond dope! Deep maroons and navys blend well with flashes of both artificial and natural lighting. The styling of the video was all about recreating the late 70s early 80s pin-up look. The puffer windbreaker, the jordache jeans, big disco curls and platforms-- M.C. in full effect ya'll! I have always been really stylistically inspired by this vid, and I think it has stood the test of time beautifully. Everytime I catch a peak of Mimi's current day, Nick Cannon holding, hoochie pants wearing self, I think back to this video and the sliver of time when Mimi was M.C.!

Steady Thang

After being put on, I've really grown to love The Clipse. This pic of them with Rick Rubin is one of the many reasons why. Notice how reliable they are-- you can always count on them for the point-and-pose!

Listen to their new track "I'm Good", featuring Pharell, over at The Fader.
