Some Stuff I Am Pretty Much Loving

It's been a really long time since I typed anything of real relevance on this blog. I've had the ideas stored up but literally zero+ time to get them out. And it's a shame. Because it's not like I'm tootin' my own horn or whatever, but some of those ideas are really quite rad.

So, to recap: I have a surplus of awesome ideas brewing, right? And now, it's Thursday at 12:32 AM and I actually have some time to get the ideas out! But in comes the other problem... I'm really just too damn tired! So let's make a compromise. I'm just going to do a brief list of things that have been rattling around in my brain lately. Some things I like (Law & Order: SVU). Some things I love (Brunch at Clinton St. Baking Co). And, a lot of things that are over 140 characters and can't fit on Twitter.

Thing #1!

Toro Y Moi is a 23 year old guy from Columbia, South Carolina who is actually named Chaz Bundick. He makes a lot of cool lo-fi music with a slight soul-ish/traditional pop underlying feeling. Listening to Toro Y Moi doesn't make me feel like a jerk on Bedford at all, not even in the slightest.

Thing #2!

Cropped Tops. Even though I haven't done a sit-up in about 3 months (shhh! don't tell!), I really like these whimsical little numbers. They make me feel all Clarissa Explains It All on one hand, and on the other hand, the new set of high-fashion crop tops make me feel like somewhat of an adult. Plus, you can wear them everywhere, even work if you play your high-waisted jeans and under-garments right!

Denise Huxtible. Real talk, when am I NOT obsessed with Denise? She's basically everything I'm hoping I'll just magically wake up as one morning.

The Catcher in the Rye. Holden Caulfield 4eva, and no Phonies allowed while yer at it!

Thing #5

Sarah Morrison's TrendMill. She owns a Rugrats Sweatshirt, a Vintage Betsey Johnson Dress, and Prada heels. I can haz hero?

What's not to love?! Down to earth and stylish... this is an ensemble any girl would wear.

These hot bitches have had a long day of kickin' ass and taking names. When they woke up this morning, they were never planning on dealing with half of the shit they dealt with, from the pot of frijoles boiling over, to the kids sneaking one too many cookies from the fuckin' cookie jar. They had to put the rest of the world in its place, let everyone know that they run shit. You heard them, they run shit!

But, alas it's all in a days work. When the last dish has been washed and the final shirt folded, sometimes you've got to let go of all that stress and sit back with a phat cigar. Just take a puff. Inhale and let it out.

If there's one thing that I do consistently, and have been doing consistently since I was about 14, it's shopping. Along the way, I've picked up some pretty funky items, and some really unique pieces. I've decided to create a periodical column to share some of my best purchases with you guys, my readers, just because keeping my best purchases to myself is too boring at this stage.

Anways, first installment... I bought this vintage tooled leather purse from Screaming Mimis, near St Marks Street, in NYC. The bright, candy-colored painted on flowers combined with the intricate Aztec-esque detailed carvings on the front and under the flap really drew me to the bag, and I'm so happy it's mine!

On same said shopping trip, I also scooped up a dope pair of vintage shades at Eye Candy by Ron Caldwell. Not my first time in the tiny boutique, I always have an amazing time in there checking out the insane, off the wall vintage shoes and hats they stock--authentic-high-as-hell platforms from the 70s! pillbox Jackie O hats! The owner, an Andy Warhol coifed dude with a fantastic voice, informed me that the pair of glasses I was coppin' were the same pair (or same style at least) that Ellen Page rocked in everyone's favorite preggers teen flick, Juno. How ill! If you're ever in New York, I definitely recommend a trip to Eye Candy, just for the wildness that is bound to unfurl!

All in all, a good days' worth of purchases! I was pretty damned proud of myself...

Martin is one of my favorite shows of all time.

Besides being one of the most innovative examples of physical comedy, the show--often referred to as "The Black Seinfeld"--went to great pains to portray a positive romance between two upwardly mobile African Americans. Although different in so many ways (Gina was "bougey", while Martin was "crass"), they both shared a desire to be the best they could for each other and to create a safe, supportive, and happy home environment for their future together.

I loved how their relationship showed depth, warmth, and they weren't afraid to be silly with each other. When you have a man like that, don't let him go! They remind me a lot of someone I used to know...

Topshop Grand Opening!

For those of you who haven't read a blog in weeks, news flash-- Topshop is opening today!

The first stateside branch of the immensely popular UK brand will open today in Soho, New York. The four-level, 25,000 sq. foot store will feature an 11AM ribbon cutting ceremony with supermodel/designer Kate Moss (whose collaboration line with Topshop will be available for sale as well) snipping the red ropes. Other capsule collections to be sold in the massive retailer include UK fashion faves Preen and Jonathan Saunders, and the entire 3rd floor is devoted to an extensive Shoe Salon! For those of you who will be spending all of your money on pretty dresses and heels, never fear because Topshop's got you covered-- their in-house Style Studio will offer on-the-spot fashion consulting, but scones and jam as well! Makeup Forever, Valley, and Woodley & Bunny will be offering makeovers and pampering as well to all interested customers, so you can leave looking fresh!

How cute are these Marc by Marc Jacobs flats! Clearly, he was on to our Lolita trend as well, because the wonderfully adorable graphic on the toe features a smiling girl donning a bright red pair of heart-shaped sunglasses.

Medicine for Melancholy Out Now!

Who wants to see Medicine for Melancholy as badly as I do?

It looks so dope! A favorite at SxSW film festival, the debut film from director Barry Jenkins focuses on two strangers who decide to get to know each other after a drunken one-night stand, instead of just parting ways and forgetting about each other. The photography reminds me of early Spike Lee (think She's Gotta Have It), and I love the reference to Godard's Breathless in the trailer!

The film is out now in select theatres. You can see it in NYC at the IFC.

Melody Ehsani Spring 09 Preview

Our favorite accessory designer over here at The Ladies First, Meldoy Ehsani, has just released these images of her Sprig '09 preview line! The designs are kicked up a notch, borrowing from such high fashion sources as bakelite and patent (major trends of the moment) to match her street edge. The pieces are all whimsical and fun, capitalizing on the use of bright and bold statement colors. I personally cannot wait for the release, I need to have everything! In the meantime I'll be patiently stalking both her website and karmaloop for releases! Peep the rest of the collection below.

Cassette Playa's New Heat
